Commercial real estate summit planned in Edmond

By: Journal Record Staff/August 12, 2021

EDMOND – Realtors and others who attend an annual conference planned by the Central Oklahoma Commercial Association of Real Estate will hear insights from experts on a range of topics, from effects of the Supreme Court’s historic McGirt decision on commercial real estate development to expectations for the industry related to Oklahoma’s growing film industry.

The all-day conference, planned Sept. 14, will be staged at the Nigh Center at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.

The summit, the sixth planned by the association, will offer a special focus on “disruptive issues” affecting commercial real estate. It will include breakfast and lunch gatherings with keynote speakers and other educational forums offered throughout the day.

Topics for the morning sessions will include:

• Use of Oklahoma School Land Trust Properties in Commercial Developments by John Fisher, director of commercial real estate for the Commissioner of the Land Office of the State of Oklahoma. He is slated to discuss how School Land Trust properties can be used for developments.

• Effects of Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) by Mike Fitter, a geologist, environmental consultant and Tulsa branch operations manager for Seneca Cos. PFAS are man-made chemicals that have been manufactured in the United States since the 1940s and don’t break down over time.

• The Growing Film Industry’s Impacts on Real Estate by Yousef Kazemi, outreach and production manager for the Oklahoma Film and Music Office. Increasing infrastructure needs will be a focus.

Topics for afternoon sessions will include:

• Single Family Built-for-Rent Multifamily Projects by David Chapman, a professor of real estate at UCO. He will discuss pros and cons of single-family communities that many developers are now building rather than typical apartment projects.

• The McGirt Decision and Its Impact on Real Estate, presented by Ryan Leonard, a partner at Edinger, Leonard & Blakeley. He will provide an update on foundational jurisdictional issues raised by the McGirt decision.

• Changing Building Management and Tenant Requirements, to be presented by Rob Roberts of First Onsite, a restoration and property reconstruction company. Participants will learn how COVID-19 has changed the way commercial real estate buildings are managed and what’s needed for different property types.

COCAR is partnering with Chapman and the UCO Real Estate Program with a goal to benefit the UCO Real Estate Foundation Scholarship Fund. UCO is Oklahoma’s only university level academic program in the real estate industry.

A to Z Inspection is the presenting sponsor of the 2021 CRE Summit.
