UCO and Coventry University to Establish Center in Security and Counterterrorism
The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) and Coventry University, located in the United Kingdom, have entered a collaboration to foster an exchange of research and expertise in the deterrence, management and mitigation of terrorism and international crime, as well as enhancing global security.
The universities plan to establish a collaborative Center in Security and Counterterrorism between UCO and Coventry University, the first of its kind between the U.S. and the U.K. The Center aims to increase collaboration on research, facilitate visits by students and faculty from both institutions, host joint seminars and workshops and seek out new funding opportunities for the betterment and safety of citizens in both countries.
“The collaboration between the University of Central Oklahoma and Coventry University to establish the Center in Security and Counterterrorism is a profound step forward for both our institutions and our state. Oklahoma's history, especially with the Oklahoma City Murrah Building bombing, underscores the need for advanced research and education in security,” said UCO President Todd G. Lamb.
“The timing of this initiative, aligning with the anniversary of Sept. 11, serves as a poignant reminder of the global impact of terrorism and the importance of preparing future leaders to confront these challenges head-on. This Center will position Oklahoma as a leader in counterterrorism efforts, enhancing the safety of our communities and beyond."
The agreement was signed in conjunction with the 16th Annual Society for Terrorism Research International Conference, co-hosted by both universities, held on Central’s campus, Sept. 4 and 5.
“Protecting our loved ones, each other, our work colleagues and the infrastructure that keeps modern life moving is of paramount importance,” said Professor David McIlhatton, associate pro vice-chancellor for research at Coventry University.
“We hope that the Joint Centre for Security and Counter Terrorism will be able to act as a beacon of light in what can often be a dark time for those impacted by such acts, and help guide authorities, businesses and communities to a safer future. Working alongside UCO means our potential reach for this work can spread as far and wide as possible.”
The agreement is the culmination of a 10-year relationship between the two universities, starting with UCO’s College of Business.
Coventry University has a long tradition as a provider of quality education, with roots going as far back as Coventry College of Design in 1843. Students benefit from state-of-the-art equipment and facilities in all academic disciplines, including health, design and engineering labs, performing arts studios and computing centers.
